Transition cows

During the transition period, trace mineral deficiency can occur, impacting health and performance of cows for the future.

Trace minerals levels

In the last trimester of pregnancy, there is a natural decline in the trace mineral status of cows in line with the increasing demand for trace minerals for:

- foetal development,
- milk drying-off and change in udder physiology,
- adaptation to new herd mate, new pens and various form of social stress.

In the pre-calving period, the feed intake declines sharply, so any dietary supplementation is insufficient, trace mineral stores in the body are under pressure and become depleted.

Prevent oxydative stress during the transition period

Even well supplemented cows can fall into trace mineral deficiency
High body condition score (Bsr) or severe Bsr losses
Increased reproductive problems
Increased risk of clinical mastitis
Special notes for heifers
  • The requirement for trace minerals is further exacerbated by the fact that they are still growing themselves.
  • Their diet is often less closely managed than that of the dairy herd and trace mineral status pre-calving can be even worse.

Boost trace minerals during the transition period

Trace minerals, in particular zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium are vital components of antioxidant enzymes which are required to combat the oxidative stress.

Cows supplemented with injectable trace minerals (ITM), during the transition period, have shown major improvements in overall herd health throughout lactation.

22 %
reduction in clinical mastitis
23 %
reduction in subclinical mastitis
29,5 %
reduction in stillbirths
16 %
reduction in endometritis
