New world for the calf

During its first moments of life, the newborn calf comes into contact with a new environment, pathogens, other animals and humans.

The calf is particularly sensitive to external aggressions and with a precarious immune status, he is mainly prone to two pathologies: neonatal diarrhea and respiratory diseases.

A major calf disease

Neonatal diarrhea, a financial and emotional burden in calf rearing, is the leading cause of death for calves less than a month old. As a multifactorial disease, it involves pathogenic agents, the animal as well as its environment.

Bacteria, viruses or even parasites will have an effect on the calf’s digestive system and the intestinal barrier will deteriorate. Water, electrolytes and nutrients can no longer be absorbed normally by the body, which will cause dehydration, weight loss and often the death of the calf.

The future generation of the farm, i.e. calves, needs to be protected, and combating these pathologies consists in a global management of their health.

Vaccination

Vaccination of the cow before calving is the most reliable way to protect the calf against neonatal diarrhoea. The cow will produce antibodies which will concentrate in the colostrum. At birth the colostrum will provide passive immunity to the calf for its first months of life.

FOCUS ON VACCINATION

Our vaccine immunizes pregnant cows and heifers to provide passive immunity to calves via colostrum. A wide vaccination window allows the producers to be flexible, to carry out group manipulations and is adapted to all types of breeding systems: at the dry period for dairy cows, during the calving interval for natural breeding systems.

Its formulation reduces the severity of diarrhea caused by rotavirus, coronavirus and E. Coli and reduces their excretion by infected calves in the environment which contributes to decrease the infectious pressure in breeding. It also allows a rapid and lasting immune response thanks to a single injection.

What is cryptosporidiosis?

Cryptosporidiosis is part of neonatal diarrhea and is the leading cause of death in young calves less than two weeks old.

This disease is caused by a parasite called Cryptosporidium parvum - it is the cause of more than 50% of neonatal diarrhea.
